Jane von Mehren

Jane von Mehren joined ZSH after more than 25 years as an editor and publishing executive at Houghton Mifflin, Penguin, and Random House, most recently as a Senior Vice President and Publisher at the Random House Publishing Group. She brings to her work as an agent a deep understanding of the entire publishing process as well as decades of hands-on editorial work on a wide range of fiction and nonfiction.

Among the writers whose careers she launched are Jamie Ford, bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and John Phillip Santos, a National Book Award finalist for his memoir, Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation. She has edited such award-winning authors as Douglas Brinkley, Jessica Hagedorn, Dava Sobel, and Susan Vreeland. In addition, she helped build the careers of numerous franchise authors including chef Rocco DiSpirito, personal finance guru Dave Ramsey, parenting expert Sal Severe, and Doug Stone, Bruce Patton, and Sheila Heen of the Harvard Negotiation Project.

Her list includes nonfiction in the areas of business, cooking, health, history, memoir, parenting, psychology, and science. Works that von Mehren has recently sold to publishers include executive coach Caroline Webb's How to Have a Good Day: Harness the Power of Behavioral Science to Transform Your Working Life (Crown Business), paleontologist Stephen L. Brusatte's The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs (forthcoming from William Morrow), historian Susan Stryker's Changing Gender: Transgender History from the Nineteenth Century until Now (forthcoming from Farrar Straus & Giroux), Linda Kay Klein's Man Made Girls: The Intimate Lives of Women Raised in the Evangelical Christian Church (forthcoming from Simon & Shuster), psychoanalyst Erica Komisar's The Present Mother (forthcoming from Tarcher Perigee) and founder and chef of the Splendid Spoon, Nicole Centeno's The Soup Cleanse Cookbook (forthcoming from Rodale).

A lifelong fiction lover, she is interested in representing YA and Middle Grade literature, thrillers, and women's, book club, and historical fiction. Among the fiction she has placed with publishers are Janet Benton's debut novel, Lilli de Jong (forthcoming from Nan A. Talese/Doubleday) and Minrose Gwin's novel Promise (forthcoming from William Morrow).

Jane von Mehren holds a B.A. with honors in English from Vassar College. She has received numerous honors over the course of her career including a Tony Godwin Fellowship, Jerusalem Editorial Fellowship, and Frankfurt Fellowship. She has taught at New York University's publishing program as well as at writers' workshops throughout the country.
